Seattle Moment
This was taken on the street in Seattle near the Westlake Center on a cool fall day in 2008. This father and daughter had stopped at a Starbucks, gotten their Latte (and presumably Latte Bianco for her) and were reading in the warm sun. I love the intimacy of this moment.

Tiger's Nest - Near Paro, Bhutan
I took this photo in October 2008. To reach my present vantage point I had hiked for about 2 hours and gained about 1,800 vertical feet. This monastery is known in Bhutan as Taktshang Goemba.

Cappadocia Landscape
In our April 2008 Turkey trip, we spent several days in Cappadocia marveling at the way houses, shops, hotels, churches and such were carved out of the Tufa hillsides. As the region's population has grown, the buildings have been extended in conventional ways leading to remarkably picturesque villages such as this one.

Kocatepe Mosque - Ankara Turkey
Ankara was the first stop on our April Turkey trip in 2008. At one point we walked from the center of the city to our hotel, a distance of about 3 - 4 miles past a new modern mosque. The mosque, which shared the design of traditional mosques, was beautiful. Richly decorated, it demonstrates that Christianity has not cornered the market on ornate buildings built to the glory of God.

Bonding ... father & daughter?

Painted on the wall, under a covered walk way, near the main temple was an extensive fresco depicting scenes from Thai mythology.

Unlike Italian frescos, these were partially gilded. Since they are routinely restored, they all appeared to be in mint condition.

You might find these pictures worth zooming in on.

Obviously, we like this place. Fun!

Blue Mosque - Istanbul Turkey
In Italy (for example) when you visit tourist sites, many are beautiful cathedrals (Duomos). When you're in Turkey, many are beautiful mosques. In both cases I love to look at the ceilings and this one was certainly worth gazing at for quite time.

Ballooning on the Edge
This photo was taken in Cappadocia (central Turkey) in April 2008. We were riding in a hot air balloon at about 1,000 feet looking down on this stark, craggy landscape and spotted these two other balloons getting ready to lift off.

THIS will make for an interesting tan line!!!

Biker
As many of you know, I'm a biker and my current ride is a Ducati ST3. Each year I try to spend a weekend in the Fall with 15,000 other bikers at the Anacortes (Washington) Oyster run. This photo was taken in the Fall of 2008 (and no, it isn't a self portrait). There's a biker culture, reinforced by carefully selected biker clothing and embellished by personal adornments (such as beards, tattoos, jewelry). The 15,000 bikers and the 14,000 residents of Anacortes seem to get along just fine, thank you.

Symi Island Port
On our April 2008 trip to Turkey, we spent some time island hopping. One of the prettiest ports was on this small island. If you ever wanted to get off the grid and find a small corner of the world out of history's way, this might be a great place to hide.

Our route: Freeway to Olympia and secondary roads to Cape Disappointment, which was a disappointment. We were unable to hike to the lighthouse because the Coast Guard was conducting live firing exercises and didn't want to kill the tourists. We continued south to Manzanita where we spent the night.

Next day we're south to Bandon where we spent the next night: Great lighthouses; Cool dunes; Cheese factory with samples; and Breathtaking views ... or there would have been except it was foggy and misty much of the day.

From Bandon to Crater Lake the road rises from sea level to about 7,000 feet. As we climbed we rode through different bands of insects. First there were mosquitoes. Next there came a band of flies. And finally there was a band of butterflies ... the kind that splat orange when they hit your helmet. We looked like refugees from a paint ball war.

The next day we descended from Crater Lake and crossed hot hot hot Eastern Oregon. By the time we got to Goldendale, it was 102. We rested up in our air conditioned motel room until dinner and then visited the observatory. Very neat. The astronomer was intrigued by my standard stumper question … “So, what is the speed of light measured in furlongs per fortnight?”

The road home took us to Yakima, where it was 82 by 8:00 AM. Then we climbed White Pass near Mt. Rainier and got rained on pretty hard for the last 150 miles of the trip.

Plaka market. This is a T-Shirt for sale inthe market. I have no idea what Tokio Hotel is, a band perhaps. Or maybe an anime character.

Kocatepe Mosque: Because of their domed architecture, there is a huge space inside for worshippers.

Timing was perfect. Focus was not. Sorry.

In this turn the pilot pulls about 6 G's and the humid Seattle air condenses in the low pressure area above the wings. Is that cool or what?
