DigitalQuixote  > World Photos - Europe > Italy 2004 2007 > Florence - Santa Croce
After the Palazzo Vecchio, the Church of Santa Croce was my most visited site in Florence. It is in the neighbourhood of my apartment. It tends to be uncrowded since it's a bit off the beaten track. It's impressive yet inexpensive. And like most churches in Florence, photos without flash are allowed. There's another reason, but I'll save it for later.

DigitalQuixote > Santa Croce: The church features a traditional façade. Inside the church there was quite a lot of restoration going on and scaffolding obscured the alter-end of the church. Still plenty to see.

DigitalQuixote > Santa Croce: And speaking of the piazza, I was caught up in a demonstration there one Sunday afternoon. I was walking back to my apartment and heard marching music from the next street over. Curious, I jogged over a block and found a big demonstration of marchers protesting the unjust imprisonment of a group of people. Signs demanded they be freed ... men, women, older, younger and children were all enthusiastic about the cause. Their destination was the Piazza de Santa Croce. The photo was taken from the steps looking back into the Piazza. At the bottom of the photo, you can just see the riot police prepared to protect the church. Beyond are the demonstrators. After they made their point, the demonstration settled into a rock concert and a good time was had by all. No harm. No foul. Fun afternoon for me. I honestly don't know why but this is one of my favourite photos from Florence.
