Gallipoli: Gallipoli was one of the bloodiest campaigns of the first world war, a battle ground where 500,000 soldiers were killed or wounded. Allied troups attempted to breach the Dardanelles to reach Istanbul and force Turkey from the war. Mustafa Kemal (later called Ataturk, the father of Turkey) lead the Ottoman Turks and defeated the allies solidifying his military career and paving the way for his political career.

Troy: In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans after Paris of Troy stole Helen from her husband Menelaus, the king of Sparta. The war is among the most important events in Greek mythology. The Ancient Greeks thought the Trojan War was a historical event that had taken place in the 13th or 12th century BC, and believed that Troy was located in modern day Turkey near the Dardanelles. In 1870 the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated a site in this area which he identified as Troy. And the rest, as they say, is history.

These photos were taken in April 2008 mostly with a Nikon D3.

DigitalQuixote > Gallipoli: There is a memorial here with the words of Mustafa Kemal - some of the most poignent words I've ever read.

“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives … you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours … You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears: Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.” – Ataturk 1964

It was a moving experience to visit here.
DigitalQuixote > Troy: There are several "cities of Troy" but there's not much left of them except some neat ruins.

DigitalQuixote > I mentioned elsewhere we were in Turkey during Eastern Orthodox Easter. At that time, veterans of the Gallipoli campaign and increasingly their sons and daughters return to the battlefield to honor the memory. On the ferry crossing the Dardanelles, I saw this old soldier and approached him to ask permission to take his photo. We had no language in common but I got my question across. He got his answer across. And afterwards I shook his hand.
DigitalQuixote > During the day we took a public ferry across the Dardanelles and due to a snafu unloading we had time to walk down to see the Trojan Horse which appeared in the 2004 movie, Troy, starring Brad Pitt. Kind of neat in a campy sort of way.
