DigitalQuixote  > World Photos - Asia > Bhutan 2008 > Dochu La Pass
During our 10 day trip to Bhutan, we twice passed over Dochu La (Pass). At the top there is a monument to the Bhutanese soldiers who died in a conflict repulsing Indian insurgents who had crossed the border and were trying to settle along the southern Bhutanese border. One Chorten for each soldier who died. The altitude here is 10.300 feet. When the skies are clear, you can see lots mountain peaks such as: Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158 m), Kangphugang 7,170 m), Zongphugang (7,060 m), and Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,497m.

These photos were taken in October 2008 mostly with a Nikon D3.

DigitalQuixote > At altitude, the air is thin and dry. The sun in October is low in the sky. I love the light here.
DigitalQuixote > Each of the chorten are ruggedly constructed and lavishly decorated. this is a beautiful and peaceful site.
DigitalQuixote > Hear you can see some of the detail of the rich decoration.
DigitalQuixote > Bhutan is a Buddhist country. And Buddhism lies close to the surface here. It lies close to the surface of the psyche of the folks we met and talked with. It's close to the surface of their behavior. One manifestation is the prayer flags we saw all over. You can buy prayer flags everywhere, have them blessed to whatever purpose you choose by a local Lama, and hang them to send your prayers along.

It's a simple image, but one of my favorites.
DigitalQuixote > I have seen prayer flags like these when visiting Tibet and the custom may have migrated in one direction or the other. We bought, had blessed, and hung our own prayer flags here, on this pass, in this special place. Not being Buddhist, I cannot guess at what efficacy they might have but the act did bring me closer to the culture of this special country.

DigitalQuixote > During our trip we were incredibly lucky with the weather. Low's in the 40's F and highs in the upper 60's and low 70's, with no rain. It couldn't have been more perfect. It appears that the mountains hold back the weather from the central valleys, and in this, the dry season.
